About Second Life
Second Life is a three-dimensional virtual social world, created and owned by Linden Lab. Multiple “players’ interact with each other and the environment through digital personas called avatars. The environment inside this virtual world is primarily built by the users (called residents) - or by virtual world services agenices who are hired to build environments on their behalf.
Second Life is often put into the Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) genre - although it is not truly a "game." Rather than focusing on traditional game play within a constructed gaming space that has a win outcome, virtual social worlds are open-ended simulations in which the attraction is largely socializing, collaboration and creating. These immersive 3-D creating, socializing, and collaborating elements are the driving force behind the intense interest it is receiving from companies, universities, libraries, non-profits, educators, and marketers.
While virtual social worlds, like Second Life, are very much in their infancy for business solutions, they are being seriously investigated for their applications in training, collaboration, prototyping, marketing, co-creation, technology development and as "third places" (gathering spaces away from home or work). Many consider Second Life as the vangaurd to the development of a 3-D Web.
